Having An Inclusive Mindset - An ATD Unwritten Competency

As organizations are becoming more diverse; including different ethnic backgrounds, generations, thinking styles, leadership styles, and more it is increasingly more important that all aspects of the talent diaspora including recruiting, retention, sourcing, on-boarding, learning and development must have an inclusive mindset.

Having an inclusive mindsetis the outlook and/or framework one uses when looking at others.  It is significantly impacted by the way in which our cognitive biases have been developed.  Regardless of where or when you were reared, we all have generalizations, stereotypes, and stigmas that have become ingrained, even at a subconscious level, in our way of seeing and interacting with others.  Proactively developing an inclusive mindset is a business requirement, especially for talent professionals.

Having an inclusive mindset is directly associated with your outlook and perspective. Being inclusive is a mindset issue because you have to choose to be accepting of the inevitable differences that exist in organizations.
